Promoting Circular Business Models in Bioeconomy
Barcelona – October, 23rd 2024 – BioHubCat, a Centre of Services for the Development of the Circular Bioeconomy in Catalonia, has officially joined PRIMED, the European project led by Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). The initiative focuses on promoting innovative business models in the circular bioeconomy, and it closely aligns with BioHubCat’s mission to generate economic value from renewable organic resources in Catalonia.
BioHubCat’s role will be to advise participants from five European regions — Southern Uusima (Finland), Tipperary (Ireland), Liguria (Italy), Northern Portugal, and Catalonia (Spain) — on building strategic agreements and governance mechanisms to advance the sector. This approach builds on the successful model developed in Catalonia. The project will include actions within Catalonia to consolidate the bioeconomy activities outlined in the Shared Agenda for the Economic Transformation of the Lleida, Pyrenees, and Aran territories (the fifth participating region). Notably, this Shared Agenda serves as a methodological model, a fact that was highly valued by the project’s evaluators. Through this involvement, Catalonia strengthens its leadership in collective action for bioeconomy development.
Ambitious Objectives
PRIMED officially launched on January 1, 2024, and will run until December 31, 2026. Víctor Falguera, General Coordinator of BioHubCat, highlighted that the practical experience gained in Lleida (and now being replicated across Catalonia through the RIS3CAT 2030 Smart Specialization Strategy) serves as a foundation for the other four regions. The goal is to accelerate the growth of the bioeconomy by establishing agreements between companies, administrations, research entities, and civil society to promote innovation around Living Labs. PRIMED encourages collaboration among multiple stakeholders from these regions, emphasizing the need to involve not only project partners but also key actors within each territory.
The project aims to achieve the following objectives in each region:
- Identify and engage stakeholders to form an initial promoter group.
- Improve cooperation between primary producers and key stakeholders to encourage collaboration, networking, and broader participation.
- Create and commit to agreements among regional entities to achieve common goals and boost the local renewable resource-based economy.
The PRIMED project includes two open calls designed to fund projects that validate support technologies for key value chains in the participating regions, with funding provided by the European Commission.
