PRIMED
ECOSYSTEM

Our well balanced internal world

PRIMED will co-create innovative forms of cooperation to integrate primary producers in novel bioeconomy value chains with a multi-actor approach.

PRIMED will establish a collaborative ecosystem to accelerate bioeconomy, in order to create an active flow of shared knowledge, expertise and resources through social innovation and a mutually beneficial Learning Opportunity for the entire ecosystem.

A new circular business model

PRIMED will develop novel Circular Bussines Models in Bioeconomy (CBMB) for the operation of biorefineries, to produce high-value bio-based products through advanced biorefineries. The CBMB
will be demonstrated in 5 Llab: ALC Bio-HUB (ES), Bio-Silica Lab (PT), Liguria Bio Lab (IT), BioEire Lab (IE) and CellFactory (FI), together with primary producers, end-users, citizens, and civil society, that will be involved through an Open Call for applicants. Each Llab will focus on a specific bioeconomy sector (Fisheries, Forestry, Farming and Agri-food).

PRIMED will conduct Open Calls providing €500k in cascading funding, which will be split into €100k
for each living lab providing selected end-users the opportunity to test and validate the bio-based
products.

First OPEN CALL announcement and information will be posted on the PRIMED website on June 2024.

LLab1 ALC Bio-Lab (SPAIN)
Description: ALC is a bio-industry park created by 150 families of primary producers (Agricultural Transformation Society) that involves more than 500 livestock farms.
Input (Feedstocks): Livestock Biomass (pig slurry, cow manure), agricultural waste (rotten fruits, wood, straw) and fruit-tree pruning.
End-products: Nitrogenous water for agriculture irrigation, and bio-fertilizers such as digestate, ammonium sulphate, can be used in the fields. Additionally, bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) can serve as fuel for tractors.
Technology: Anaerobic digestion plant, and biogas upgrading plant, which will be included during the project.

THE WORK
STRUCTURE

How we work

Project Management

Create the tools and documents for an effective and ethical financial and technical management of the project. Maximise the future use and impact of the results developed in the project.

Establishing framework conditions

Identify potential of biomass feedstocks and their applications in the bioeconomy in an integrated view. Analyse novel circular business models. Explore existing technologies and their link to investment options and identify barriers and enablers for sustainable long-term operations.

Process characterisation and Circular Business Models development

Selection of specific value chains for each LLab based on technological risk analysis. Co-design and develop business models for LLabs that are balanced, sustainable, profitable, and aligned with bioeconomy. Create sustainable value chains that promote the revalorisation of resources and reduce bio-waste. Identify and assess new opportunities for scaling up in bioeconomy. Leveraging emerging technologies and develop CBM Navigator.

Creation of the collaborative ecosystem for Circular Business Models co-creation

Accelerate the growth of bioeconomy by creating innovation and business ecosystems around the living labs, and by establishing fruitful collaborations between multiple stakeholders. Development of a toolbox that includes all PRIMED project results as well as publicly available tools, resources from other EU projects and initiatives, to create an open-access repository that enables knowledge-sharing.

Process and Circular Business Models demonstration & Impact monitoring in Living Labs

Demonstrate an innovative technological process for transforming feedstock resources into high-value bio-based chemicals, materials, and products, validating their end-use applications through an open call for end-users. Evaluate the economic feasibility, market potential, social, and environmental impacts of CBM for biorefineries in 5 Living Labs.

Accelerating the collaborative bioeconomy ecosystem

WP6 will continue the work being done in WP4. Reaching strategic multi-actor, 5-helix agreements (shared future vision) to transform rural areas economy towards a bioeconomy-based model in which primary producers can capture a significant part of the created value. Validate the toolbox with stakeholders and publish it to engage bioeconomy ecosystems and communities.

Good practise, Policy recommendations & Exploitation

Develop robust, accessible and practice-based guidelines and instructions to build shared agendas to support multi-actor agreements with the intention to allow rural areas to advance towards economic transformation upon territorial resources. Identify and showcase successful bio-based products and processes and provide good practise to improve future bioeconomy initiatives. Develop policy recommendation for regional, national and EU levels to incentivise scale-up of bioeconomy investment. Replicate, review and refine successful bioeconomy business models across different regions and living labs. Showcase adoption of bio-based innovations among varied stakeholders.

Communication & Dissemination

Establish effective communication channels between the consortium and EC as well as between consortium partners. Ensure an adequate management and coordination within the project to achieve the main goals.

MILESTONES &
IMPACT

Innovating for preservation

The European PRIMED project aims to bolster rural economies through green job creation and investments. It focuses on developing scalable biorefinery models, creating diverse value chains (15+ CBMB), and investing in R&D with €500k for innovative technologies.

The project links underused feedstocks with tech and market data, testing 10 bio-based solutions for economic and environmental viability. It also identifies success factors and offers policy recommendations for robust contracts, training, and marketing strategies.

PRIMED targets climate neutrality by 2035 in the land sector and by 2050 in the economy through efficient bio-waste utilization, including clean energy and carbon sequestration. It supports agricultural diversification, sustainable food systems aligned with the farm-to-fork strategy and fosters collaboration among primary producers and value chain stakeholders.
