The PRIMED project has successfully concluded its 2nd Open Call, receiving 34 proposals from companies across Europe and associated countries (ES, IT, PT, IE, FI, GR, AT SK, TR, EG). The high quality of submissions reveals how many companies are committed to this shift toward circular bioeconomy solutions.
This response builds on our 1st Open Call and demonstrates continued industry interest in participating in our Living Labs (LLABs) network. PRIMED operates five Bioeconomy Living Labs that serve as regional demonstration hubs, showing technologies that convert underused biomass into high-value products:
- LLAB1 (Lleida, Spain) converts livestock and agricultural waste into bioenergy and biofertilizers, biostimulants and received 8 proposals.
- LLAB2 (Braga, Portugal) specializes in extracting bio-based silica from agro-residues, drawing 6 proposals.
- LLAB3 (Liguria, Italy) transforms fisheries waste into agricultural biostimulants and agriproducts into biofertilizers, attracting 8 proposals, 3 focusing on fishery applications and 5 on agro tech.
- LLAB4 (Tipperary, Ireland) creates bio-based soil additives from forestry materials and had 10 proposals, among them, 3 focused on dairy products and 7 processing forestry waste.
- LLAB5 (Espoo, Finland) uses plant technology to transform agri-food by-products into cultured cosmetics for humans and ingredients for animal care products. They have submitted 2 proposals.
Selected companies will receive funding for laboratory analysis, prototype development and engineering support. PRIMED partners will also provide market analysis, business models and impact assessments (e.g techno-economic, social and life cycle assessment) to ensure innovations are practical and scalable.
This 2nd Open Call moves us closer to demonstrating how circular bioeconomy principles work across different industries and regions. Supporting companies to test and refine their solutions builds the foundation for a European economy where waste becomes valuable input rather than disposal cost.
